A remarkable story. We can forget that the gospel story has to become our story. The gospel tells our own human and Christian story. And so I suggest that we move the gospel to 2015.
We are privileged to eavesdrop into the longest recorded conversation Jesus ever had, with a Samaritan woman, and we do not even know her name. It’s been said that anytime someone significant in the Scriptures remains nameless, that person acts as the universal person – standing in for each of us. So, let’s imagine ourselves sitting there at the well, too.
The readings for this Sunday are really tough. They’re always tough. But what are we to do with this image in the first reading of a God who tests Abraham? Let’s plunge right into the story of Abraham’s would-be sacrifice of his son Isaac.
